Lyons Middle School Athletics
Mrs Carmen Loots, Athletic Director
The primary purpose of middle
school athletics is participation, with an emphasis on the development of
skills, teamwork, sportsmanship, citizenship, dedication, commitment,
responsibility, fairness, and respect for self and others.
LMS School Colors
are Red and Black and our school mascot is the River King/Queen.
Lyons Middle
School has eighteen interscholastic athletic teams that compete in five different
sports. LMS offers the following interscholastic sports:
7th grade
volleyball (two teams - Blue and White)
8th grade volleyball (two teams -
Blue and White)

EXPECTATIONS
The interscholastic athletic program
at LMS provides opportunities for athletes to develop and utilize their talents
through organized competition against athletes from other schools.
Participation in athletics and the commitment to an athletic team should be
taken seriously. Athletes are expected to attend all scheduled practices and
team functions, unless absent from school that day.
If possible, doctor,
dentist, and other types of appointments should be scheduled at times that do
not conflict with practices or games/meets. Babysitting, hair appointments,
shopping, and other similiar excuses are not acceptable at the middle school
level.
Participation in interscholastic athletics at LMS is a privileged
opportunity, rather than a right. Students who elect to participate in
activities shall be expected to exemplify high standards of behavior and
citizenship.
ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY
To participate in athletics at Lyons Middle School, a student must be
passing all classes in which they are enrolled: language arts, math, science,
social studies as well as exploratory classes. A passing grade is represented by
a D or better in each of the students classes.
If a student-athlete is determined to be academically ineligible, he/she
will be placed in a probationary period.
This time shall last for one-half of the total number of games/meets
scheduled for that current season. During
this time, the ineligible student must attend practices, but may not participate
in games/meets. He/she may not travel
with the team to road games/meets.
At the
end of this probationary (one-half of the total number of games/meets scheduled
for that current season), students will pick up a Grade Check Sheet from the
athletic director and take it around to all of his/her teachers. At this time, one of two things will
occur:
1. If the student is currently
passing all classes, the student will be re-instated to the team as a full team
member with no other penalties for that season.
2. If the student is not passing
all classes, the student will be dropped from the squad.
In additional to the academic eligibility standards set forth by Lyons
Middle School, the Iowa High School Athletic Association has set forth the
following guidelines:
A student will be eligible in
grades seven and eight during only his first four semesters (eight quarters) of
attendance and before his/her sixteenth birthday.
No seventh or eighth grade athlete can compete in an athletic contest
involving a student below the seventh grade level or above the eighth grade
level.
TEAM TRAVEL / TRANSPORTATION
Athletes will be expected to ride to and from an athletic event with their
teammates. Good behavior is expected on the bus.
An athlete may ride home only with his/her own parent/guardian after the parent/guardian has
signed the appropriate waiver. The athlete is not allowed to leave until the
athletic event has been completed.
A parent/guardian may not transport a child, other than his/her own without special
permission from the principal or athletic director. The proper waiver must be
signed by the principal or the athletic director before the team has left the
school to participate in the event that day. This arrangement must be for a
special situation, not for a matter of convenience, and granting such permission
will be at the principal or athletic director's discretion.
Athletic schedules are also listed on the LMS Student
Activities page
