Lutz, Harold “Red”

Lutz is a 1946 graduate of Clinton High School.  Lutz was a three-year varsity letterman and was named 1st Team All-State his senior year.  He was a member of the famous “Firewagon Five” basketball team that were the state runner ups in 1946.  A four-year letterman in track, Lutz was the state champion in the pole vault and hurdles in 1946 and also won the Drake Relays pole vault in 1945 and 1946.

After high school, Lutz played football at the University of Alabama where he was a three-year letterman for the Crimson Tide and was an All-SEC selection in 1951.  After college he coached high school football in Alabama for twenty-eight years, coaching 31 division I players, including NFL Hall of Famer John Stallworth.  He also coached wrestling and served as an athletic director.  In 1970 his Tuscaloosa, Alabama high school program was named best in the country.  Lutz was elected to the Alabama High School Hall of Fame in 1995.
