McDevitt graduated from Clinton High School in 1958.  He was a four-time state champion and seven-time All-American swimmer for Hall of Fame coach Howard Judd.  McDevitt was part of the team that won six consecutive state titles.

After graduation, McDevitt attended the University of Wisconsin where he was an NCAA runner-up and Big Ten record holder in the 100-yard freestyle.  McDevitt qualified for the 1960 Olympic Trials in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing 8th.  In 2001, McDevitt was inducted into the Iowa High School Swimming Hall of Fame.
