Dan Mabee was a 1958 graduate of Clinton High School. Mabee was a member of three Clinton High School state championship swim teams, one of which broke the national record in the 400 freestyle relay in 1958. Mabee was also a two time All-American, receiving those honors in 1957 and 1958.

Mabee’s swimming career continued at Texas Tech University, where he lettered in 1961 and 1962 and also competed at the 1960 Olympic Trials. Mabee was an official head lane timer in the 1972 Olympics, and won the National Swimming Championship Competition in 1973.

After Mabee’s competition days were over, Mabee went on to become the head swimming coach at Sauk Valley College where he spent 12 years and his combined college coaching record was 306-174.

Mabee later returned back to Clinton High School where he taught PE and coached the boys’ swimming program for 10 years and the girls’ swimming program for 17 years. Mabee also helped with the football program until his retirement in 2001.

Throughout his coaching career, Mabee was awarded Coach of the Year 14 times, and ended his career with a combined 520-287-3 record. Mabee continues to volunteer within the Clinton High Athletic Department and returned to Clinton High to serve as the Homecoming Grand Marshall in 2011.  Mabee still resides in Clinton with his wife Carol.
