Induction Class of 2018 – Contributor
Gary Determan, a member of the Clinton High School Class of 1972, was a multi-sport athlete, participating in baseball, cross country, and track & field for the River Kings.
Gary’s interest in broadcasting began at a young age as he listened to Clinton High School Hall of Famer, Hank Dihlmann, on Clinton’s KROS radio station. Upon graduation, Determan completed the broadcast program at Iowa Central Community College. He then continued his education at Northwest Missouri State University.
In 1975, Determan started his broadcasting career at WTIM in Taylorville, Illinois. In 1976, he took the opportunity to return home and work for KROS covering River Queen basketball and River King baseball, as well as other area sports. In 1986, Determan took over for Hank Dihlmann as the full-time Voice of the Clinton River Kings and Queens.
In addition to covering prep sports, Determan also covered the Midwest League for KROS from 1978 to 1992 and then again from 2006 to 2008, broadcasting over 1,200 games.
Gary and his wife, Mary, have four children, David, Teresa, Kyle, and Nolan, all graduates of Clinton High School, as well as eight grandchildren.
