Induction Class of 2016 – Head Volleyball Coach, Teacher

Coach Mark Massey has been selected to the Clinton High School Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility after retiring as head volleyball coach after 38 seasons.  Massey graduated from Savanna High School and Knox College.

Massey began his basketball and volleyball coaching career in 1974 at Lyons Junior High School.  In 1978 Massey was hired as Clinton High School’s fourth head volleyball coach.  Massey’s career record of 818-373-68 ranks him as fourth all time among Iowa high school volleyball coaches.  In the Mississippi Athletic Conference, Massey’s record is 232-95, the most MAC wins as a coach.

During Massey’s tenure at Clinton High School, Massey created a program that expected excellence and high achievement.  In 37 of 38 seasons, Massey’s teams finished in the top half of the MAC.  Massey was selected as Iowa’s USVBA Coach of the Year in 1989 and was the Regional and State Coach of the Year in 2000.  Massey was a finalist for National High School Coach of the Year in 2000.  Massey’s teams have produced 25 All-State players, 15 Division I athletes, one high school All-American and two NAIA All-Americans.

Massey’s 2011 team was Clinton High School’s fifth MAC championship.  Massey’s teams had four state tournament appearances, including state runners-up in 1982 and 1994.  Coach Massey attributes the success of the program to his assistant coaches, support staff, administrators and his players.
