It was the second time this season the Varsity River Kings football team had to wait out a lengthy weather delay, but this time the result was much more positive as the Kings dominated Maquoketa 35-14. The offense was again powered by Ethan Carpenter’s 179 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Carpenter was not alone, though, as he got plenty of help. Konnor Schroeder added a 35 yard touchdown run and an 11 yard touchdown pass to Marshall Johnson. Nolan Eggers rounded out the Kings scoring with a goal line touchdown in the fourth quarter. Defensively, the Kings were stout all night. Jay Dodd gathered two interceptions for the Kings who improved their record to 3-1 on the season. They begin district play on Friday night in Burlington. Be sure to congratulate our young men. Go Kings!!
On Friday night, the Sophomore River Kings hosted the Cardinals from Maquoketa in a gridiron football matchup. Despite being a close game at halftime, the Kings held the Cardinals scoreless in the second half and pulled away securing the WIN by a score of 36-12! Scoring early for the Soph Kings was Julian Davis on a 65 yard TD run. Later in the 1st quarter, Micah Tague returned a kickoff 78 yards for a score! In the second half, Liam Petersen lofted a 31 yard touchdown pass to Davis, and added a 41 yard bomb to Isaiah Lines for another score. Petersen later added a one-yard dive to complete the scoring. The Soph Kings moved their record to 3-1. We are back in action on Friday as we travel to Burlington to battle the Greyhounds! Thank you to everyone who came out to support the Kings on Friday!!! GO KINGS!!!
The Sophomore volleyball team traveled to the Bettendorf Tournament on Saturday. THe Queens came in with high expectations, and finished the tournament in 2nd place. The Queens dropped their first match to host Bettendorf, but played some consistent volleyball going forward as they defeated Moline and Davenport North in pool play. They entered bracket play as the 2-seed and defeated the number 1-seed in pool B, North Scott in straight sets. Although the team battled hard in the Championship match, they came up a little short and finished as runner up. Great Job Soph's! The varsity held their annual home tournament this past weekend. The Queens finished in 4th place, making the Gold bracket and finishing 3-3 of the 9 team draw. Joselyn Petersen led the Queens offense with 36 total kills on 94 total attacks. Maggie House and Mal Byrns followed with 23 and 17 kills, respectively. Haylee House led the Queen setters with 35 assists, followed by Vanessa Hensel's 32 assists. Kylie Schroeder led the Queens with 6 aces from the service line. Harlow Miller led the Queens' front defensive line with 8 assist blocks, followed by Petersen's 1 solo and 6 assist blocks. Tenley Cewe led the back row with 36 total digs defensively and Maddie Rowden passed a team high 2.04 serve receive rating (on 3-point scale). The Freshman Queens return home tonight to play Davenport Central and Pleasant Valley. The Sophomore, JV and Varsity Queens host Pleasant Valley tomorrow in Yourd Gym at 5:00pm.
