The Clinton High School River Queens showed tremendous resilience Tuesday night in Davenport, battling back from an 0-2 deficit to reverse sweep the Central Blue Devils in a thrilling five-set showdown, 18-25, 25-27, 25-16, 25-22, 15-13. After dropping the opening two sets, the River Queens responded with determination, winning three straight sets to complete the comeback and secure a hard-fought victory on the opening night of MAC play. Kiara Krueger led the offensive charge for the Queens, recording 13 kills while hitting a team-best .360. Maggie House added 13 kills, while freshman Grace Griswold continued to make an impact with 11 kills in the five-set battle. Tucker Sechrest was also highly efficient offensively, hitting .308 with four kills on 13 attempts without an attacking error. The Clinton offense was distributed effectively, with Alaina Carpenter and Griswold directing the attack. Carpenter finished with 23 assists, while Griswold contributed 22 assists. Defensively, sophomore Tenley Cewe was outstanding in the back row, pacing the River Queens with 26 digs while passing a team-best 2.25 on a 3.00 scale. Cewe and House also delivered a team-high four aces apiece as the Queens consistently applied pressure from the service line, totaling 16 team aces on the night. Cewe also contributed eight additional assists in the out-of-system offense. Jayda Skiff turned in a strong performance in serve receive, passing a 2.23 while adding 13 digs. Carpenter was also active defensively, collecting 13 digs of her own. At the net, Audry Gruhn was a force defensively, recording a team-high five assist blocks. House added four assist blocks as the River Queens made key defensive plays at the net throughout the comeback. The River Queens will look to carry the momentum from Tuesday's victories into Thursday's MVC vs. MAC Crossover in Dubuque. Clinton will open play at 5:00 p.m. against host Hempstead before facing #4 (4A) Western Dubuque and Senior. The River Queen sophomore squad also picked up a hard-fought victory over Central, defeating the Blue Devils in four sets, 25-14, 25-13, 14-25, 27-25. The Queens came out strong, controlling the opening two sets before Central battled back to force a fourth set. Clinton answered with late-set heroics and timely defensive saves to slip past the Blue Devils, 27-25, and secure the four-set victory. Brooklynn Mohr led the offensive attack with 14 kills, while Peyton Adams quarterbacked the offense and led the team in assists. Mena Albaghdadi and Lyla Huizenga anchored the back row, each recording more than 10 digs as the Queens kept balls alive and extended rallies throughout the match. The River Queens also served effectively, consistently putting pressure on the Blue Devils' serve receive and helping Clinton control the match early.
Last night the River King and Queen Cross Country team competed in its annual triangular scrimmage. While no teams scores were taken, the Queens were led by Cambly Sattler 1st place, Alli Haskell 3rd place, Natalia Connolly 4th place, Scarlett Fergurson 5th place, Piper Jennings 11th, and Kirstin Bengtson 12th place. The River Kings were paced by C.J Estes 1st place, Maddox Mojeiko 2nd place, Alonso Aguila 3rd place, Connor Roberts 5th place, Cael Schwarz 6th place, and MIles Schneeberger 9th place. Competing in their first cross country race were Scarlett Fergurson, Piper Jennings, Leila Waters, Diego Donaire, Chase Collender, Soren Bengtson, Jonah Buelow. If you see a runner in the hallway, give them a high five. The River King and Queen Harriers are back in action next Tuesday at home at the annual School House Open.
