7th grade science students explored the geologic time scale through rock layer cupcakes. Student's practiced their investigative skills by taking core samples with straws and examining the core sample layers to piece together the geologic events in their cupcake models. Students then examined the insides of the cupcakes and compared their core samples to the actual layers inside their model. Many even found fish sprinkle fossils. Students were able to determine relative age of the rock layers according to the laws of superposition, cross-cutting, and inclusions.
